NUMBER OF PEOPLE FACING SEVERE HUNGER WORLDWIDE SURPASSES MORE THAN 120 MILLION

According to the data of International Food Policy Research, more than 120 million people are suffering from hunger and malnutrition all over the world. It is also reported that the figure for 2018 has peaked for the last two years. At the same time, it is noted that the number of displaced people facing the problem of hunger or malnutrition reached about 70 million people this year. In six African countries, including Chad, Haiti, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Yemen, and Zambia, the issue poses the most danger. The most critical situation with the starving population is recorded in the Central African Republic.

According to the report, this year many countries recorded significant progress in overcoming hunger “thanks to policies and some programs,” but the full resolution of this problem, which was to be achieved by 2030 as part of the sustainable development program, is still under in doubt. In March, the UN stated that the situation in Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya led to the largest humanitarian crisis since 1945. The UN warns that the lack of collective and coordinated measures of the world community can lead to death from starvation and disease, as well as a wave of migrations, which will create an unstable situation in entire regions.
